Nikolay Alexeev's schedule is extremely intense. From 2000 Nikolay Alexeev has been the conductor of the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He performs Viennese classics as well as Tchaikovsky, Mahler and Shostakovich. With Nikolay Alexeev the Philharmonic Orchestra performed all Brahms' symphonies, all Rachmaninov's piano concertos, a number of works by Prokofiev and "Gurrelieder" by Schönberg. Working with Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, he finds his innate conductor's interest towards the concert performances of operas and ballets. They include, above all, compositions of Stravinsky, which constitute one of the main repertoire directions of Alexeev.

The maestro regularly gives premieres of works by modern composers. In Philharmonic Hall, he conducted the first performance of the Thirteenth Symphony by Slonimsky, First and Fifth Dante Symphonies by Tischenko, Concerto Cantabile by Shchedrin (St Petersburg premiere), "Figure of Speech" by Korolev, "Tsar's Chants" by Korchmar and other works. In the 2010-2011 season with the St Petersburg Philharmonic the conductor has included in his extensive program symphonies by Schubert and Mahler, Messiaen and Slonimsky, "The Poem of Ecstasy" ("Le Poème de l'extase") by Scriabin, "The Sea" (La Mer) by Debussy, Barber's Adagio for Strings, the most virtuoso opus of the Argentinian Ginastera, violin concertos by Berg and Korngold (first performance in St Petersburg), works by Mendelssohn and Gounod, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. In spring 2011 Nikolay Alexeev took part in the grand tour of St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra in the USA. The 2011-2012 season included music of different epochs and styles – works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Rossini, Brahms, Elgar, Prokofiev, Petrov, Tishchenko. In addition, the conductor presented the world premiere of the “Knight Suite” by Korolev, in tandem with Sergei Krylov was performed the Fifth Violin Concerto by Paganini (St Petersburg premiere), and together with Alexei Lyubimov – Piano Concerto by Schönberg.
